Queen Chantal Steps Off the Court
Chantal Laboureur, recently crowned the inaugural European Queen of the Court and one of Europe`s top beach volleyball defenders, has announced her retirement from the sport. This decision comes just two years before she might have competed in the Paris Olympics, a dream she ultimately chose to set aside.

The 32-year-old German athlete explained her retirement, stating, «It would have been `just two years,` but also `still two more years`.» She revealed her decision was driven by a growing desire to prioritize her private life and start a family, making it impossible to commit another two years to professional beach volleyball.
The recent Queen & King of the Court European Finals, where Laboureur and Karla Borger secured victory in Utrecht, marked one of her final professional appearances. Following this, she earned a gold medal at the 2022 International Military Sports Council Beach Cup in Warendorf with Cinja Tillmann. Her career concluded after competing in her last two VW Beach Pro Tour events, the Paris Elite16 and the Maldives Challenge, alongside her partner Sarah Schulz.
Laboureur & Borger crowned as European Queen of the Court
Laboureur`s international journey began approximately 15 years ago. Partnering with Levke Spinger, she clinched the continental trophy at the 2007 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship in Czechia. The duo further celebrated as U19 world champions in the Netherlands in 2008. Chantal also secured two U23 European Championship medals: bronze in 2011 and gold in 2012.
She joined the senior European Tour in 2009, earning her first medal—a bronze—with Julia Sude at the 2013 Montpellier Satellite. Together, Laboureur and Sude achieved numerous Masters-level continental golds, including Biel/Bienne (2014), Baku (2014), Jurmala (2016), and Baden (2017), alongside a bronze at the 2017 CEV European Championship in Latvia.
Reflecting on her career, Laboureur remarked, «I remember all these very well.» She recalled her debut at the CEV U18 European Championships in Brno 15 years prior, her subsequent years on the European Tour, and the bronze medals at the European Championships in Jurmala, fondly remembering the German ice hockey fans who supported them. She added, «I don’t even remember right now how many European Championships I attended, but it felt like a lot.”
Her memories of the most recent EuroBeachVolley, held in August in her home city of Munich, are still vivid. Laboureur and Schulz achieved a fifth-place finish in an event Chantal described as having «an outstanding atmosphere.» She extended a warm message to her youngest partner, Sarah Schulz, exclaiming, «Big hug to my youngest partner Sarah, by the way! She is one of the kindest players and persons I know!»

Beyond CEV competitions, Laboureur achieved significant success, securing two gold, six silver, and three bronze medals on the FIVB World Tour, plus a silver from this year’s inaugural VW Beach Pro Tour. Although she narrowly missed her Olympic dream, losing a decisive qualifying match for Tokyo 2020 with Sandra Ittlinger, she boasts three German national championship titles, was named Germany’s Player of the Year in 2018, and won the German King of the Court tournament last year.
Laboureur expressed gratitude, stating, «So many great memories! And so many great tournaments! I really enjoyed the time and I want to thank everybody who was or still is involved in making us players have a good time!» She acknowledged the sacrifices required, noting, «Beach volleyball gave me so much, but as a professional athlete you have to sacrifice a big part of your social life, for example. We are far from home for many weeks and we can’t attend family life like others do. I love this sport so much and if I could do everything at the same time and the day had 48 hours, I would probably play until I`m 50, but that’s not the case.»
Looking ahead, Laboureur plans to travel, then complete her medical studies—with one year of practical work remaining—and focus on starting a family. She concludes with a hopeful note that she might someday return to the beach volleyball scene in a different capacity.
