Additionally, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, acquired from Tampa Bay in 2024, is currently in the third year of his eight-year deal. In total, the Mammoth have an impressive eight players locked in through the 2029-30 season.
General Manager Bill Armstrong credits Guenther’s early commitment as the catalyst for this widespread buy-in. «When Guenther stepped forward and was the first to declare, ‘This is where I want to be,’ it was monumental,» Armstrong explained. «That sentiment then cascaded into Cooley saying, ‘I want to be here,’ and then ‘Bainer’ expressing, ‘I want to be here too.’ And just like that, the momentum began.»
This collective dedication has positioned the Mammoth on the brink of reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the franchise relocated from Arizona. Utah currently holds the top wild card spot in the Western Conference, boasting a seven-point lead with 11 games remaining before Tuesday’s home game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Should they qualify, it would mark the organization’s first playoff appearance since 2012.
Coach Andre Tourigny attributes the strong team culture, fostered by ownership, as a significant factor in players choosing to stay. «The fact that these guys remain here signifies their strong bond, their mutual belief, their desire to achieve greatness together,» Tourigny stated.
Schmaltz, who inked an eight-year, $64 million extension on March 11, foregoing unrestricted free agency this summer, affirmed that the franchise’s clear direction simplified his decision. «I believe we are in a period where we can be a consistently successful team for the foreseeable future,» Schmaltz commented. «It was essentially a straightforward choice.»
Weegar revealed that the established core group was the primary reason he agreed to waive his no-trade clause and relocate to Utah. «They possess all the necessary components with their core group of players, and they are formidable,» Weegar emphasized. «They aren’t just starting out; they are now a well-established entity.»
Ownership has also consistently delivered on its commitments. The Delta Center is undergoing significant renovations, a state-of-the-art practice facility has been completed, and players are provided with premium travel arrangements.
Schmaltz highlighted the striking contrast compared to the team’s days in Arizona. «This represents a complete turnaround,» he said. «Now, I feel we have one of the league’s finest owners, willing to invest whatever it takes.»
The influx of young talent is equally impressive, with prospects Tij Iginla, Cole Beaudoin, and Caleb Desnoyers excelling in the CHL, and goaltender Michael Hrabal coming off three strong seasons at UMass-Amherst.
Armstrong outlined the strategy to integrate these prospects gradually rather than rushing them. «Having your key players already in place allows you to introduce new talent slowly and effectively,» he noted.
With playoff hockey at the Delta Center potentially just weeks away, the Mammoth organization firmly believes their brightest moments are still ahead. «This team is exceptionally talented, and its potential is incredibly high,» Weegar concluded.
